Old School Jiu Jitsu vs New School Jiu Jitsu

I get asked this question a lot and my best and most concise answer is as follows: Old School Jiu Jitsu, also known as “traditional” Jiu Jitsu, is characterized by its focus on self-defense and its adherence to traditional techniques and values. This style of Jiu Jitsu typically emphasizes the use of leverage and technique over brute strength, and emphasizes the use of throws, joint locks, and chokeholds to defeat an opponent. New School Jiu Jitsu, also known as “sport” Jiu Jitsu, is characterized by its focus on competition and its use of modern training methods. This style of Jiu Jitsu typically emphasizes the use of speed, athleticism, and conditioning to defeat an opponent, and places a greater emphasis on points and leg attacks. In summary, Old School Jiu Jitsu is focus on self-defense, traditional techniques, and values, while New School Jiu Jitsu is focus on competition, modern training method, speed, athleticism, and leg lock submissions.

BJJ Floating Mat System DIY Walkthrough

I’m going to share the process of building a floating mat system, from design to sourcing materials and build. I figured I try to take out as much guess work since I had no guidance and had to learn on my own. There were several pieces of the puzzle that came as some small surprises, but hopefully this helps the next person who decided to make the leap to a better mat system. I’m unsure of the process for other countries, but in my case I will detail the process for importing goods into New Zealand – it may differ in other places. I’ll include links to the factory for all the specific mats I ordered in the post. Towards the end of Sept 2020, just after the Covid-19 lockdown ended in New Zealand, I had an opportunity to expand my BJJ club and sub-lease space in our existing gym we ran out of. I had an elaborate vision of a floating mat system underneath some juicy dollamur mats for use to train in. I was introduced to the floating mat system years ago when I lived in Los Angeles on a visit to Kron Gracie’s academy in Culver City. […]

Unspoken and Spoken Mat Rules At Combat Room Miramar #jiujitsufirst

Some of these were borrowed from BJJEE and Gentlemen Grappler, some were modified by me, and others are my own rules or rules that have been passed down and seen as tradition 1. Shake the hands of the black belts when you enter and when you leave the mat. Additionally, after greeting the blackbelt please greet your teammates with the JJ handshake and smile 🙂 2. If a higher belt invites you to roll, you roll. They will invite you politely, if you say no they might not ask you again (except on special situations such as injuries, necessary rest for competition and others). 3. If a black belt is rolling near you, stop and move. If you are a black belt and you have a stable position and the lower belts around you are scrambling or with a submission locked in, don’t be a tyrant, be humble, you move. 4. Be stoic. If you get a submission, don’t celebrate, don’t show any joy. If you are submitted, don’t show frustration, shake hands and restart. 5. If the pain is tolerable don’t stop. Don’t talk to your partner about it, don’t expect them to say they are sorry, most of the times they didn’t […]

Hey guys! My friend and Professor Vanderson Pires invited me to talk on his podcast today. We talked about Jiu Jitsu, working in Film and surviving cancer. This is something I've wanted to do for a while now, especially for my daughter so she can have a slight glimpse into my life before she was born. Check it out! đŸ™

K-Guard Flow Chart #bjj

I put together a flow chart for the K-Guard system (a.k.a. Squirrel Guard or Cross Guard) to coincide with the BJJ seminar myself and brown belt Sam Anderson are covering on Saturday. I strongly suggest you view the chart on a desktop to take advantage of the notes sections. For whatever reason they do not display on a phone and there is a lot of information within the notes for you. Click and drag the flowchart around, and use the +/- to zoom in and out. Full screen works to see it in its full glory! Please feel free to comment below if you have any questions. You should be able to view the flowchart full screen for better clarity. If not here is a link directly to the chart The seminar was inspired by Lachlan Giles’ recent ADCC victory over Godio, Duarte, and Aly. The deeper study was strongly based on Aaron Milam and Robson Moura’s take on the position. Oss

Why I bow.

I started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2007 in Los Angeles with my good friend Professor Ricardo “Rey” Diogo.  We went to the same gym and lifted weights during the lunch hour. One day we started chatting and he invited me to his BJJ academy for a “workout”. After my 1st class I was hooked, signed up immediately, and quit my other gym. That said, if anyone knows Rey, he teaches you the mat rules on day one. Bow before stepping onto the mats – it’s a show of respect to the tatme and you are checking your mind into practice, think of it as a handshake If Professor is on the mats teaching, wait for Professor to wave you onto the tatame – its respectful but also lets Professor know who is in class If you are late to class, after bowing to Professor you pay 20 push ups – life has consequences Begin class lined up according to rank and bow to Professor – this provides a clear and unambiguous ranking system and you are face to face with your instructor, ready to begin class. Professor can make announcements during this time, can address issues, make sure everyone’s uniform […]

Mixed Martial Arts – it’s not the fighter, it’s the fans

Last week I had a conversation with my coach about the Rousey vs Nunes fight. He was very honest in his response and said he doesn’t really like to follow the sport of MMA, so he didn’t watch the fight.  I respect that, coming from a 3rd degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blackbelt.  I knew he had a meaningful reason as to why he felt this way, so I had to ask what was it? *side note* Ironically, earlier that day I had commented on an article going around on Facebook as to “3 Reasons BJJ still isn’t mainstream in the US”  My response was: It’s hard. It takes time. There are no shortcuts or cheats to get good at it. It requires critical thinking and and a lot of time to acquire a deeper understanding. Most people don’t have the tenacity or patience for it. Most people are uncomfortable with their personal space being invaded. Many people don’t like the idea of other people’s sweat on them either. Plus it’s still associated with the “Just Bleed” UFC guy, so many people think we’re lunatics. There’s a variety of reasons but it’s still growing. It takes 100 years for a sport to […]

Why do YOU train?

I train because Jiu Jitsu is part of my life. I train because Jiu Jitsu is more than Jiu Jitsu. I train because of the comradery Jiu Jitsu provides. I train because it helps me relax. I train because I’m forced to be present. I train because I’ve learned humility through Jiu Jitsu. I train because it isn’t easy. I train because the complexity of Jiu Jitsu is so vast I will never get bored. I train because Jiu Jitsu is my catharsis for a rough day. I train Jiu Jitsu because I’ve learned to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations. I train because the confidence and calmness I learn on the mats, I take with me into everyday life. I train because Jiu Jitsu is free of dogma. I’ll stop at dogma-free for now. Next May 2017 will mark my 10 year anniversary in training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Prior to that, I dabbled very briefly in Kickboxing but I would have never considered myself a martial artist.  Up until May 2007. What attracted me to Jiu Jitsu was it’s complexity, it’s grace, the control, the dynamic, the amount of technique, and it’s fun! But what the Gentle Art is also […]

BJJ saves lives

Given the current social events in America (and the world), I feel our small Jiu Jitsu community has a responsibility to help make a difference under the guidance of our respected coaches. I know it may be perceived as a “band-aid” to an open, scathing, much deeper societal wound, but hear me out:  All law enforcement should be REQUIRED to train Jiu Jitsu minimum 3 days a week. Why BJJ? Jujutsu (/dʒuːˈdʒuːtsuː/ joo-joot-soo; Japanese: æŸ”èĄ“, jĆ«jutsu ïżŒ listen) is a Japanese martial art and a method of close combat for defeating an armed and armored opponent in which one uses no weapon or only a short weapon. “…for defeating an ARMED and ARMORED opponent…”  meaning THEY have a sword(s)/armor and you don’t. Think about that for a minute.  A furious, trained soldier is coming for you armed with a Samurai sword with the intention of cutting you in half…and you MUST fight him. What do you do? If this were today and you were a cop, your heart rate would sky rocket, you’d panic, you’d pull out your gun and shoot this lunatic with no hesitation. Rightfully so. But if you DIDN’T have a weapon – gun, sword, bat, mace, taser,  bad breath – you’d have […]
